With up to 20 staff members and a robust acquisitions budget, the Getty Research Institute's (GRI) Chief Curator will have the opportunity to create world-class collections to advance research at the Getty and around the globe.   Reporting to the Associate Director of Collections & Discovery and working in close partnership with other members of the GRI management team, the GRI Chief Curator will develop and implement the GRI’s strategic priorities for Special Collections in an academically stimulating environment. To accomplish this ongoing effort, the GRI Chief Curator will oversee a team of 11 Curators who collectively manage roughly 72,000 rare books, 27,000 single prints and drawings, 800 collections of rare photographs, and over 120,000 linear feet of manuscripts and archives, along with optical devices, architectural models, audiovisual recordings, and digital-born materials.   The focus of the GRI Chief Curator will be to oversee the acquisition and collection process from a wide variety of perspectives reflecting a collection mission and strategy that focuses on shifts in scholarship, engaging new audiences, and creating access and amplifying the acquired and newly-acquired content with the curators and institutional partners while emphasizing a current initiative to promote cataloging of large collections alongside reducing the number of incoming acquisitions.   The efforts of the GRI Chief Curator and curators will be anchored in a strong interest to bring existing departments and work processes into alignment and center the work along the core set of values: Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion, as well as Sustainability and Education so that the GRI can more effectively advance the local, transnational, and global discovery of research materials essential to the study of art history, visual culture, and the built environment.   The GRI Chief Curator works closely with other institutions within Getty, including the Museum, Conservation Institute, Foundation, Getty Digital, Development, Communication, and the Trust, to encourage further discourse and partnership (acquisitions, exhibitions, and programming) and strengthen this department's work in furthering Getty’s mission.   THE IDEAL CANDIDATE The ideal candidate will be a scholar and a strong administrator and manager who may come from art libraries, rare book libraries, special collections, university libraries, academia more generally, or from a foundation, museum, or other cultural institution focused on humanistic inquiry. They will manage a department noted for its collegiality among the staff who embody a willingness to experiment with new ideas and approaches. The department will continue to work on generating groundbreaking exhibitions, publications, and research projects that the ideal candidate will influence.   The new GRI Chief Curator will oversee the growth and shift of this department into one that reflects 21st-century collection best practices, with particular attention to ethical stewardship, and will be noted for their administrative, management, and problem-solving abilities. The Getty Research Institute (GRI) seeks a full-time Library Assistant III to work as a member of the Circulation team at the Getty Library off-site Annex facility in Valencia, California, 91355. Reporting to the Circulation Annex Supervisor, the Library Assistant III’s primary duties are; managing the book digitization preparation workflow, which includes working from selected lists of general collections materials, pulling titles, assessing materials for digitization, and updating lists post-digitization, and general collection maintenance “end processing”, which includes marking, housing, repairing, and evaluating the condition of library materials. The Library Assistant III will work in a team-based environment but also under little to no supervision. The Library Assistant III will work on some additional circulation tasks including pulling, sorting, and shelving books, charging materials, and editing online records. The Getty Library uses the Ex-Libris suite of hosted products: Alma, Primo, and Rosetta. This is a one-year limited-term position in the Special Collections Cataloging at the Getty Research Institute. The Library Assistant III will work with minimal supervision under a Special Collections Archivist to process the Merrill C. Berman Collection of U.S. twentieth-century posters.   The collection is 68 linear feet and contains approximately 600 posters and accompanying materials such as photographs, catalogs, journals, and ephemera. The thematic focus revolves around the social roles of artists and graphic designs during key social movements in the United States, notably the federally funded initiative Work Progress Administration (WPA), American social justice movements, LGBTQ rights, African American activism, and civil rights protests. The collection features work by prominent artists: Emory Douglas, Richard Floethe, Hugo Gellert, Kenneth Anger, Dorothy Fellnagel, Katherine Millhous, Donald Moffett, Jack Smith, Andy Warhol, Dorothy Waugh, and David Wojnarowicz.   The Library Assistant III’s duties will include re-housing, arrangement, and description of collection materials according to archival standards and best practices.   Applications submitted by April 15 will be fully considered.

Our Mission   The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks to inspire curiosity about, and enjoyment and understanding of, the visual arts by collecting, conserving, exhibiting and interpreting works of art of outstanding quality and historical importance and is one of four programs of the J. Paul Getty Trust.  The Museum operates two sites, the Getty Villa in Malibu, which exhibits its collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, and the Getty Center in Brentwood, which displays its collections of European art: Medieval and Renaissance illuminated manuscripts, paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, drawings to 1900, and photography to the present day (including non-European works).  The Museum mounts approximately 25 temporary exhibitions a year across its two sites; maintains an annual permanent gallery improvement program and offers wide-ranging and ambitious programming for its visitors.   The Opportunity   The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks a qualified Administrative Assistant to support the office of the Associate Director for Collections. Reporting to the Associate Director for Collections, the Administrative Assistant manages day-to-day tasks for the Associate Director to include budgeting and financial reporting, scheduling meetings, travel, and managing communications with internal and external colleagues and vendors. Additionally, the Administrative Assistant will work closely with support staff for other Museum senior staff and leadership across the Getty Trust. Work will involve significant confidential material, complex travel and scheduling requirements, and will require discretion, diplomacy and tact.   Effective communication skills are required for the position. Ability to be adept with standard industry systems and applications including Outlook; Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); Adobe Acrobat. Experience with PeopleSoft Financials a plus.

The Getty Research Institute (GRI) is seeking a limited-term Archivist I to facilitate description and access to the GRI’s unique materials. The focus of this position will be to enhance description of the Photo Archive, a collection of over 2 million documentary photographs of western art from antiquity through the early 20th century, organized by chronology, medium and culture. This is a fifteen-month limited-term position.   Reporting to the Special Collections Archivist III who will oversee the project, the Archivist I will concentrate on issues of arrangement and discovery in several large painting and drawing collections, especially Italian and French. They will provide folder-level description of sections of the archive, finalize DACS-compliant finding aids for those sections, and update MARC records in the repository’s catalog and in OCLC. A substantial element of the position involves identifying works of art depicted in the photographs. The archivist should be able to visually classify paintings and drawings by national/regional schools and chronological periods.

The focus of this position will be to enhance description of the Photo Archive, a collection of over 2 million documentary photographs of western art from antiquity through the early twentieth century, organized by chronology, medium and culture. This is a one-year limited-term position.   Reporting to the Special Collections Archivist III who will oversee the project, the Library Assistant II will concentrate on increasing discovery of material by adding folder-level description to existing box-level finding aids for the various sections of the Photo Archive. They will also work on basic maintenance tasks, such as replacing loose box labels, placing fragile or damaged photographs in Mylar sleeves and creating circulation records.
