Job Summary

This critical, leadership role, reporting to the Vice President of Development and Institutional Advancement, is a new role in the Office of Development and Institutional Advancement (Advancement) at The J. Paul Getty Trust (Getty). The Deputy Director will inspire and lead the Advancement team to cultivate a well-informed, connected community of champions who are strongly committed to our common goals and desired outcomes.

We are looking for an experienced, dynamic, and creative leader with exceptional listening skills and a proven track record of engaging in authentic and substantive dialogues with donors and partners to recognize, nurture, and facilitate philanthropic desires to realize our shared purpose. In addition, the Deputy Director will help ensure ongoing relationships with and raising the sites of a small, select group of supporters.

The Deputy Director is a key member of Advancement’s Leadership Team and works closely with Senior Director of International Programs and Institutional Advancement. A highly motivated self-starter who is goal oriented, the Deputy Director will help to set the tone for culture and ensure that the advancement team has the support, direction and accountability needed to meet annual divisional goals and objectives. The Deputy Director is responsible for managing three team leaders and, indirectly, the four key areas:

  • a strategic mission-advancement giving programs team who build long-term, mission-aligned relationships with partners of all types (e.g., individuals and organizations) through strategic giving;
  • a donor relations team comprising two arms:
    • donor communications area responsible for acknowledging, recognizing and reporting on the impact strategic giving has;
    • a donor experience area responsible for showing the impact of the partnership among donors and Getty; and
  • an advancement operations who serve as the data analytical and strategic powerhouse of the overall advancement team.

The Advancement team co-creates opportunities for individuals, institutions and groups to contribute in ways that reflect our shared values and advance our common goals for cultural enrichment and collective impact. We honor and sustain relationships with existing supporters who offer their time, talent, ties, testimony and treasure, while fostering and expanding a diverse and representative set of relationships across all possible future supporters.

  • Represent the VP of Advancement with authenticity and purpose, serving as a thoughtful ambassador at meetings, community events, and collaborative initiatives.
  • Ensure policies and practices are implemented with integrity and inclusivity, reinforcing a culture of ethical fundraising and respect for donor intent and institutional values.
