Job Summary

Under general supervision, provides telecommunications and cabling design and hardware assistance to users in the computing community. Assists with telecommunications and cabling components.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Implement and maintain telecommunications and cabling infrastructure while ensuring security and efficiency.
  • Design, document, and assist with new or improved telecommunications connections to enhance system performance.
  • Respond to trouble calls, diagnose issues, and develop effective solutions to restore functionality.
  • Install, terminate, test, label, and troubleshoot copper (Category 6, etc.) and fiber optic cables, including Sumitomo FutureFlex Air-Blown Fiber.
  • Set up and maintain telecommunications rooms, including racks, cabinets, cable trays, and termination equipment.
  • Install cable supports, mounting assemblies, and field devices such as CCTV cameras and wireless access points.

Qualifications

  • Associate college degree or equivalent in computer science preferred, or a combination of education and relevant experience
  • 2-5 years of related experience with voice and data communications and/or cabling
  • Experience installing and configuring telecommunications equipment and applying diagnostic techniques for problem troubleshooting

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to provide basic installation and troubleshooting of fiber, copper and coax cabling systems Includes the use of tools and methods such as laser indicators, optical time domain refractometer, hot melt and mechanical splicing, air blown fiber optic installation and RJ 66 Krone and AT&T 100 copper terminations, tone generator and inductive amplifier
  • Some basic training classes and/or certifications from BICSI
  • Excellent communication skills, with ability to communicate complex technical issues to non-technical users
  • Mid-level IT and telecommunications technology knowledge
  • Ability to use discretion and judgment
