Job Summary

With broad direction, develops, administers, and presents the GRI’s special collections of Renaissance to contemporary prints and drawings by acquisitions and donations, maintaining and managing them in collaboration with colleagues. Continually expands knowledge of these collections, particularly by demonstrating expertise in diverse graphic media, building on areas of collection strength and filling lacunae to establish new research opportunities and initiatives. Disseminates the collections by curating exhibitions and programs, publishing scholarly research on paper and online, and organizing presentations, conferences, and workshops. Demonstrates an established reputation for scholarship, connoisseurship, and best professional practices, and is recognized as a major contributor to the field as part of established networks of colleagues and experts.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Applies extensive knowledge of art history to advanced curatorial assignments
  • Performs advanced scholarly research to support the institutional mission
  • Organizes significant exhibitions, major publications, or major acquisitions
  • Cultivates connections and networks nationally and internationally with scholars and museum colleagues
  • Researches and recommends acquisitions and donations for collection development
  • Publishes and lectures extensively in area of specialization
  • Leads assessment of conservation needs of the collections; recommends, prioritizes and reviews digitization projects; assesses loan requests
  • Collaborates and leads in research projects; promotes collections and/or serves as a resource to scholars, visitors and staff
  • May supervise research assistants or other project staff, including project planning and reviews
  • Actively cultivates donors and contributes to GRI Council activities

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in art history, 7-10 yrs of curatorial experience with collections of art works on paper OR Ph.D.
  • Fluency in two foreign language (European, such as French, German or Italian, or Asian) required
  • Top level contributor in one or more specialized curatorial functions

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Recognized or demonstrated ability to build long-term relationships with dealers, donors, and collectors, and to collaborate with curators and colleagues across Getty programs and sister institutions
  • Competent and experienced with issues related to collection management of prints, drawings, and archives and familiarity with digital asset management tools
  • Accomplished in art historical research and writing with a history of publications in both articles, books, and online formats
  • Proven ability to communicate and distill information for a specialized audience or the general public
  • Ability to adapt written material for a variety of audiences online or in print.
