Job Summary

Getty is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Photographer with advanced post-production expertise. This role, reporting to the Manager of the Center Imaging Studios at the Getty Center Museum, will involve expert-level imaging of museum collections for research, publication, exhibition, conservation, scientific analysis, online access, and creative purposes.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced 2D and 3D imaging of artworks and objects, with a focus on works on paper (e.g., photographs, drawings, and paintings) and three-dimensional objects. 
  • Participate and assist in a variety of digitization initiatives, utilizing a range of hardware, software, and studio lighting methodologies, including technical and computational imaging techniques (e.g., photogrammetry, spectral imaging). 
  • Expertly handle the post-processing of image files, ensuring digital assets are organized and integrated into our Imaging Data Pipeline. 
  • Collaborate closely with curators, conservators, scholars, and imaging professionals to deliver high-quality, precise images for multiple uses. 
  • Configure studio setups, including lighting, capture equipment, and workstations, to ensure accurate and safe photography of complex objects. 
  • Troubleshoot and maintain imaging equipment, including camera systems, calibration of monitors, and color management tools. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in photography and/or equivalent experience. Master's preferred
  • 5-8 years experience in digital imaging or photography

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Extensive experience with SLR cameras, medium-format cameras, Phase One digital backs, and Capture One software. 
  • Stong working knowledge of color management, profiling, and calibration and quality assurance. 
  • Advanced knowledge of studio lighting equipment, color theory, and light-modifying techniques. 
  • Proficiency in post-production software, particularly Photoshop.
  • Experience with specialized capture methods, including UV, IR, and photogrammetry. 
  • Proven expertise in high-resolution high-quality 2D & 3D imaging and post-processing.
  • Ability to handle art objects and fragile materials.
  • Experience in museum or cultural heritage imaging.
  • Deep networks and energetic involvement in the Cultural Heritage Imaging community.
  • Strong collaboration skills, able to work with a multidisciplinary team of curators, conservators, and designers. 
  • Skilled in articulating creative and technical concepts clearly and effectively.
