Job Summary

The Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) is seeking a Project Archivist II to fill a four-year, limited-term post. Reporting to the GCI Manager of Research Services, you will implement protocols for organizing the GCI’s past, current and future project materials in all formats, according to archival best practices and Getty Institutional Archives standards. As an example, materials may document GCI field projects at cultural heritage sites around the world and may include project planning briefs, scientific research results, condition assessments, conservation treatments, environmental monitoring data, photographs, site protection planning, training records, publications, evaluation reports, and other items that illustrate the development, evolution, and history of the projects.

About Us
The Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) is dedicated to improving the conservation of the world’s cultural heritage—its art objects, museum collections, historic buildings, and archaeological sites. We are located at the Getty Center in Los Angeles, and our work often takes us to heritage sites across the globe including locations in South America, Asia, and the Middle East, where we work in partnership with heritage professionals from the region. Our staff come from diverse disciplines including architecture, archaeology, conservation, information science, chemistry, engineering, operations and business management, and communications.

This job will be based in our office at the Getty Center in Los Angeles. It will begin in the office full-time and the opportunity to request a telework schedule may be available after an initial period of training and orientation and will be discussed and approved by your supervisor. Typically, staff with approved telework schedules at the Getty Conservation Institute are in the office more than half of the time.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Bring leadership to the Getty Conservation Institute’s (GCI) internal archiving efforts to ensure that materials will serve as lasting records of project activities and will be accessible to cultural heritage professionals going forward.
  • All work will be done in collaboration with Getty’s Institutional Archives department (which is responsible for documenting Getty’s activities as an international cultural and philanthropic organization), as well as colleagues from multidisciplinary project teams at the GCI.
  • Use thorough knowledge of current records and archives principles and theory, as well as professional judgment and pragmatism, to define workflows, procedures, and standards.
  • Drive archiving activities at the GCI and ensure compliance with procedures.
  • Create finding aids for GCI project materials in accordance with national and Getty Institutional Archives standards. This will involve performing appraisal, arrangement, description, and basic preservation activities on records in all media formats and will use ArchivesSpace, Media Management, digital forensic tools, and metadata embedding software.
  • Determine public accessibility/availability of GCI project records and maintain confidentiality as appropriate.
  • Ensure materials are organized and transferred to Getty’s Institutional Archives department.
  • In all activities, ensure the long-term preservation and retrievability of the GCI’s intellectual assets, including digitized, born-digital, and traditional assets using the guidelines established by Getty’s Institutional Archives department.
  • May supervise one staff person, who will also process materials according to established procedures and archival best practices.
  • Your participation in professional development opportunities is encouraged and supported through on-the-job learning, specialized training courses, and participation in professional meetings and workshops.
