Job Summary

We are seeking a conservation professional with a background in preventive conservation and a keen interest in education to fill a four-year limited-term Associate Project Specialist position in the Getty Conservation Institute’s Collections Department. In this role, you will be an integral team member of the multidisciplinary Managing Collection Environments Initiative, which conducts research, education, and field activities that address technical and practical issues pertaining to the sustainable control and management of collection environments in museums, libraries, and archives.

 

This job will begin in the office full-time. The opportunity to request a telework schedule may be available after an initial period of training and orientation and will be discussed and approved by your supervisor.  Typically, staff with approved telework schedules at the Getty Conservation Institute are in the office more than half of the time. 

 

Mission

Getty Conservation Institute works internationally to advance conservation practice in the visual arts—objects, collections, architecture, and sites. The Institute serves the conservation community through scientific research, education and training, field projects, and disseminating information. In all our endeavors, we create and deliver knowledge that contributes to the conservation of the world's cultural heritage.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Assist in the planning of projects that address new challenges and recognized needs of professionals working in collections care, with a focus on sustainable strategies.
  • Conduct research in areas related to risk management, access to collections, monitoring of environments and collections, and collections’ values.
  • Provide expertise in the development and implementation of courses, workshops, and other educational activities to engage and inform professionals who care for collections in museums, historic houses, archives, libraries, and storage spaces
  • Organize and participate in extpert' meetings to explore sustainable tools, protocols, and guidance for collections on display, on loan, and in storage
  • Cultivate relationships with local, regional, and international individuals and institutions; collaborate with them to develop solutions to challenges encountered by collections care professionals
  • Assist in managing and monitoring operations for projects and activities, which includes working with multidisciplinary teams, managing deliverables, and meeting deadlines
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at professional conferences
  • As part of the GCI Collections department, you will contribute to planning of project goals and the establishment of departmental priorities.
  • Your participation in professional development opportunities is encouraged and supported through on-the-job learning, specialized training courses, and participation in professional meetings and workshops.

     

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in conservation, museum studies, archaeology, science, or a related discipline
  • Master’s degree in cultural heritage conservation (ideally, preventive conservation or museum studies) or equivalent practical conservation experience
  • Minimum of 3-7 years of project management experience working in cultural heritage conservation (ideally, collections care or preventive conservation)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrate a broad knowledge of current research and practical issues related to collections management and environmental, social, and financial impacts
  • Critical thinking regarding the challenges of environmental control on buildings and collections.
  • Good research and writing skills and demonstrated experience authoring reports, articles, and/or peer-reviewed publications.
  • Good interpersonal and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams
  • Adaptable, creative-problem solver, able to prioritize
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Fluency in a language in addition to English is valuable in this position.
  • Must be available for frequent international travel
