The Head of Sustainability is a newly created position and will work as a visionary leader and organizational strategist to provide thoughtful leadership, creativity, and an experienced perspective on matters related to sustainability and resilience.


Reporting to the Director of Facilities, the Head of Sustainability works to develop and execute broad-based Getty-wide strategic sustainability initiatives and will bring subject matter expertise on sustainability to support the institution not only using resources responsibly but preserving cultural property. The Head of Sustainability’s work is poised to impact across the Getty organization.  This position provides an opportunity to work with leaders and colleagues, institution-wide, to synthesize environmental information and partner on sustainable and resilience initiatives.


The Head of Sustainability is a leadership role and will work in close partnership with the four constituent programs and others across the institution in the development, implementation, and coordination of the Getty's strategic sustainability and resilience initiatives.

Major Job Responsibilities

Strategic Sustainability Program

  • Develop and oversee the implementation of Getty’s strategic sustainability plan with a multiple year implementation action plan.
  • Through a lens of sustainability, focus on Getty’s collections preservation, land stewardship, building and facilities planning, design/construction, energy, water, waste and recycling, transportation, procurement, and key operations.
  • Serve as the sustainability facilitator and subject matter expert to guide sustainability strategies and action plans.
  • Manage climate action planning and implementation to reduce Getty’s green house emissions.
  • Lead development of scope, deliverables, cost impact, timeline, and procurement of sustainability related feasibility studies and programs in collaboration with Getty stakeholders, and consultants.
  • Act as an advisor for energy and utility programs and maintain a close working relationship with Getty’s engineering team.
  • Work with operations and programs on sustainability related projects; perform necessary analyses to maximize financial opportunities; identify, track, and complete incentive opportunities.
  • Work with the Director of Facilities and Head of Government and Community Affairs to promote coverage of sustainability and serve as the primary contact on sustainability issues; produce internal and external sustainability communications.
  • Develop sound communications methods with Getty staff on this important work.


Resilience Planning

  • With the knowledge that sustainability and resilience planning complement each other, proactively support the organization considering and responding to rapid change and threats to operations, such as climate change, changing transportation modes, workplace transformation and risks to the collections environment.
  • Coach the institution to look holistically at all activities to reduced impacts to the environment and adapt to change.
  • Research and investigate environmental trends and associated risks to the institution.


Sustainability Projects and Reporting

  • Prepare greenhouse emissions inventory, reports; disseminate results and analysis of the progress on off-gassing reduction.
  • Analyze Scope I, II, and III greenhouse emissions.
  • Lead and oversee implementation sustainability engagement programs, initiatives, and commitments.
  • Develop and implement outreach programs, initiatives, and metrics to promote sustainability goals and objectives.
  • Provide regular and timely reports and presentations to Getty management and staff on plans, progress, achievements, and opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain a communication plan with metrics for disseminating sustainability plans, initiatives, achievements, and engagement resources.


  • Bachelor’s degree in related field required;  Master’s degree highly preferred.
  • Professional certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years experience implementing environmental or sustainability programs, resource management, environmental initiatives, or equivalent in a complex organization – experience in higher education setting preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience leading sustainably corporate and/or education programs with a strong knowledge of resilience programs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to inspire confidence and to motivate and persuade diverse groups to work together collectively, in order to meet common objectives.
  • Demonstrated personal and professional commitments to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Creative problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong knowledge of sustainability practices, and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Ability to analyze and understand research and execute solutions.
  • Experience with presentation to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of greenhouse emission and reporting software.
  • Demonstrated experience in budget planning and prioritization of projects, programs, and activities, using sound judgment while meeting organizational requirements.
  • Strong results-orientation skills and a commitment to measuring program performance.
