Job Summary

The Getty Research Institute Imaging Studios is currently accepting applications for a Senior Imaging Technician. We are seeking a positive, creative, and experienced imaging professional with expertise in digital imaging for cultural heritage. The successful candidate will be joining a team of skilled imaging professionals working on a variety of digitization activities assisting scholarly research, publications, online discovery, exhibitions and preservation.


The Senior Imaging Technician will have primary responsibility for digitization activities related to Research Institute exhibitions and will work closely with curators, exhibition staff, and other stakeholders to develop and execute digitization plans for in-house exhibitions including photography of exhibition objects for publication, preparation of images for large-format signage, and general exhibition documentation.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Establishes proper conditions for accurate photographic capture, including setting up lighting and capture equipment
  • Applies expert knowledge of digital capture to photograph library, archival and special collection materials
  • Performs high-end post-processing tasks including color adjustments, masking, layering and file stitching
  • Prepares and produces color-accurate match prints for publication
  • Produces prints or facsimiles for exhibition signage and didactic displays
  • Tracks project status and submits regular production reports to stakeholders and department manager
  • Prepares and organizes digital files for ingest into digital repositories or delivery to other destinations
  • Works in partnership with colleagues to develop and execute digitization production plans
  • Performs post-production image quality evaluation, ensuring quality and consistency


  • Bachelor’s degree in photography and/or equivalent experience
  • 5-8 years experience in digital photography services

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of digital camera equipment, Phase One Digital Back and Capture One experience preferred
  • Advanced knowledge of studio lighting equipment and light-modifying techniques
  • Advanced knowledge of Photoshop and other imaging manipulation software
  • Expert knowledge of color theory and color management best practices
  • Familiarity with imaging guidelines for cultural heritage, such as FADGI and Metamorfoze
  • Proven ability to produce color-accurate inkjet prints
  • Proven ability to work in partnership in teams across disciplines and build relationships
  • Proven ability to problem-solve and adapt creatively to complex imaging problems
  • Proven ability to handle art objects and fragile materials
