Job Summary

The Getty Research Institute (GRI) seeks an archivist to join a project team for the final year of processing the papers of Frank Gehry. Documenting the developmental stage of this Pritzker Prize-winning architect's career, the archive includes drawings, project records, models, correspondence, photographic material, and ephemera relating to 283 projects designed between 1954 and 1988.

 

Reporting to the Gehry processing team lead, the Archivist I’s duties will include physically processing and arranging the material according to archival best practices; contributing to the online finding aid in compliance with national standards; consulting regularly with the processing team, and with colleagues throughout the GRI as appropriate; and participating in outreach activities related to the collection.

 

This is a limited-term position for 1 year.

 

 

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Arranges, processes and rehouses collection materials
  • Creates new metadata based on standards, best practices, research and analysis
  • Makes decisions regarding storage and preservation of collection materials in consultation with others
  • Provides guidance to junior members of the processing team
  • Contributes to outreach activities
  • Undertakes special projects as assigned

Qualifications


  • Graduate degree in Library and Information Studies from an ALA-accredited library school, Art History, or a related discipline

  • May require advanced subject, language, and/or technical expertise

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of established standards, such as DACS, EAD, LCSH, AAT, and best practices
  • Experience with ArchivesSpace or other collection management systems preferred
  • Subject knowledge in architectural history preferred
  • Experience handling architectural materials preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to meet deadlines and apply policies and procedures consistently
  • Ability to lift and carry 40-pound boxes
  • Ability to climb ladders
  • Means of transportation to work sites at both the Getty Center in Brentwood and the Getty’s off-site warehouse in Valencia, approximately 30 miles to the north
