  • Job Summary

    The Getty Research Institute seeks a digitally savvy, experienced, and versatile content strategist, writer, and editor to participate in leading content creation and dissemination of content on our website and social media channels. The successful candidate is a standout idea-generator and problem solver, and an expert multi-media storyteller and communicator with experience managing and mentoring direct reports. Position may also be assigned discrete digital projects such as audio tours for our gallery exhibitions and multi-media online exhibitions, and will be a key participant in an ambitious, multi-year project to overhaul our web content to align with new branding guidelines for tone and voice, applying expertise in content design and content presentation.

     

    This position will be responsible for surfacing issues and developing solutions to complex content strategy and workflow challenges, managing multiple and competing deadlines, and ensuring that projects are delivered on deadline. The ideal candidate is adept at creating and implementing highly innovative content strategies, creative briefs, and communication strategies for the web and social media, thrives in a highly collaborative environment, and excels at developing warm and collegial relationships with a wide range of staff, subject experts, and stakeholders.

     

    The position will report to the Head of Web & New Media and is based at the Getty Research Institute (GRI) in Los Angeles. The GRI is an international center for the study of visual culture and houses the largest art library in the world, with vast special collections materials ranging from the 15th century to the present.

    Major Job Responsibilities

    • Oversees creation and dissemination of digital content from conception through completion, serving as the primary contact for internal and external parties
    • Serves as editorial and content strategy lead for projects, working with subject experts, content creators, and production staff
    • Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders, staff and subject experts on content development and creation
    • Executes media creation including hands on content creation   
    • Manage direct reports; conduct performance reviews and establish performance related goals
    • Manages and hires outside vendors
    • Problem solves creative and practical concerns across multiple digital channels and content types, addressing concerns of key stakeholders
    • Develop, write, and execute content strategies, edit material and ensure projects proceed on time and deadline
    • Creates and executes content strategies and project proposals; develops and manages multiple concurrent project plans

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Communications or Digital Media Production; Master's degree a plus
    • Strong background in arts and humanities and an understanding of cultural research environment is preferred
    • Working knowledge of user experience research and practices a plus
    • Journalism and/or marketing experience preferred.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

      • Experience successfully managing direct reports, and high comfort level in giving and receiving feedback
      • Demonstrated ability to tactfully and diplomatically work with subject experts and stakeholders
      • Comfortable in a fast-paced, iterative environment
      • Expertise in the development and successful execution of content strategies that articulate audience and user needs and map them to success measurements
      • Outstanding content designer, with the ability to creatively adapt brand guidelines, audience profiles, and institutional priorities to conceptualize story ideas, multimedia content pieces, and cross-channel storytelling.
      • Expert writing, editing, copyediting, and proofreading skills with proven ability to write for different types of audiences as well as for different distribution channels
      • Exceptional organizational skills, with project management experience and proven ability to meet deadlines
      • Proficient in media creation and production tools. Working knowledge of content management systems; Adobe Creative Suite; project management tools such as Trello, Airtable, and Intervals; and Chicago Manual of Style.
