  • Job Summary

    Creates and processes various metadata independently and collaboratively to provide and enhance access to published electronic, digital, physical resources and data sets relating to scholarly art history, humanities, and art conservation in a variety of languages. Using professional judgment, applies bibliographic metadata standards and principles to clearly describe materials in order to provide effective access to them using a variety of scholarly research tools. Works collaboratively in a metadata team with other catalogers, and with other internal units and external organizations that provide or use the metadata.

    Major Job Responsibilities

    • Focuses on the creation of original metadata and complex metadata revision for regular and rare monographs and integrating resources based on national standards, best practices, local guidelines, research, and analysis for electronic, digital, physical resources and data sets relating to scholarly art history, humanities, and art conservation in a variety of languages
    • Creates new metadata of high complexity based on professional judgment in the application of standards, best practices, research, and analysis
    • Edits, aggregates, maps, enhances, transforms, and disseminates existing bibliographic and controlled vocabulary metadata in the local Library database and other databases as appropriate
    • Participates in special projects, including enhancing metadata for resources published before 1801
    • Manipulates and enhances metadata post-processing by using a variety of software tools
    • Revises and supervises the work of others in the unit and helps with training needs
    • Solves bibliographic access problems
    • Reviews bibliographic and controlled vocabulary metadata created by other catalogers, other internal units, and external organizations
    • Prepares name authority metadata for submission to NACO and bibliographic metadata for submission to BIBCO and eCIP
    • Recommends, creates, and updates bibliographic and controlled vocabulary metadata policies, procedures, and guidelines
    • Assists in maintaining and updating the unit's website content

    Qualifications


    • For librarian positions: MLIS from an ALA-accredited library school; graduate degree in Art History or a related discipline preferred. For other positions: Graduate degree in Art History or a related discipline

    • Minimum 2-3 years professional experience

    • May require special subject, language, or technical expertise

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Reading knowledge of at least two European foreign languages.
    • Advanced-level facility with systems required to perform work duties, including OCLC Connexion, MarcEdit, and integrated library systems (Alma preferred). These may also include systems designed for collection management, digital materials management and transformation, digital repository management, digital asset management, data management, data set management, data integration, communications, resource discovery, and social media
    • Knowledge of Python desirable.
    • In-depth knowledge and application of RDA/AACR2, MARC, LC cataloging standards, and LC classification
    • Knowledge of cataloging issues and trends, particularly linked open data, Open Access, and BIBFRAME
    • Knowledge of or experience with non-MARC formats and non-RDA metadata standards
    • Experience in the principles of authority control, particularly selecting and applying controlled vocabularies and ontologies
    • Ability to meet deadlines, apply policies and procedures consistently, conduct research, and present recommendations
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Effective interpersonal and collaborative skills
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a small team
    • May require supervisory or project management skills
