Job Summary

The Getty Research Institute is seeking a research assistant to support the Digital Humanities Specialist for 30 hours per week by facilitating their research and assisting with their digital art history research projects and related initiatives.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the conceptual development of digital art history projects by organizing/creating project documentation, searching for and ordering texts, conducting environmental scans of existing technologies and writing up reports and recommendations, etc;
  • Requests images for exhibitions and/or publications; researches and obtains art and image permissions;
  • Provides support for exhibition planning and execution, as needed;
  • Conducts research in the library and special collections;
  • Proofreads, edits, and translates as needed;
  • Assists with creation of project websites or presentations;
  • May assist with organizing art programs for publications by communicating with authors, updating essay drafts, assisting editors in checking page proofs, proofing indexes, etc.


  • Bachelor’s degree in art history or related field; Master’s degree preferred

  • 0-2 years research experience (education may be considered)

  • Working knowledge in at least one foreign language preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Advanced proficiency in one or more computing technologies (such as web development, image editing and digital asset management, data visualization tools); experience with 3D imaging preferred

  • Experience with digital humanities projects preferred

  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a timely manner

  • Ability to build relationships, collaborate and work on teams

  • Ability to set and meet deadlines for oneself
