Job Summary

The Getty Trust is looking for a senior software developer to work on Arches, an open-source, graph-based data management platform.  This mission-critical role would work on developing and extending core features of the platform in partnership with Farallon, the maintainer of the software, as well as building new extensions or interfaces to the project in support of specific Getty projects.  It is anticipated that at least 50% of the work performed in this role would directly contribute to the Open Source project.


Major Job Responsibilities

This role would be responsible for synthesizing development needs across multiple projects at the Getty and working with the Arches community to both advocate for and implement these features into the core platform.  They would represent the Getty in daily standups and other development meetings, and would communicate the direction and progress of the platform to stakeholders across the Getty.  They would work with UX/UI staff within the Getty to customize interfaces for specific data management needs.


The position will report to the Enterprise Software Architect, and work closely with the Semantic Architect and other infrastructure developers.

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or a combination of education and relevant experience
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience
  • Understanding of graph-based models and especially Linked Open Data
  • Very comfortable in modern Python and Javascript
  • Familiar with github based development and agile practices
  • Good communication skills, especially with non-technical stakeholders
  • Able to be productive in a distributed, inter-institutional collaboration
  • Willing to travel within California on a semi-regular basis (LA to San Francisco)
  • Willing to participate in open-source, community-based development

  • Understanding of the web architecture
  • Cultural Heritage experience
  • Arches experience
  • User Experience/Interface design experience
  • Experience with ElasticSearch
  • Experience with TripleStores / SPARQL or other semantic technology

  • Expertise in designing, developing, testing, and deploying applications

  • Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical clients
