Job Summary

This is a limited term position for 3 years. The Archivist I will be a member of the project team responsible for processing the Frank Gehry Papers. Documenting the developmental stage of this Pritzker Prize-winning architect's career, the archive includes drawings, project records, models, correspondence, photographic material, and ephemera relating to 283 projects designed between 1954 and 1988. Duties will include physically processing and arranging the material according to archival best practices; contributing to the online finding aid in compliance with national standards; consulting regularly with the processing team, and with colleagues throughout the GRI as appropriate; writing blog posts and participating in outreach activities related to the collection.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Applies advanced knowledge of archival standards and best practices for archival arrangement and description
  • Makes decisions regarding storage and preservation of collection material
  • Provides guidance to junior members of the processing team
  • Undertakes special projects as assigned


  • MLIS from an ALA-accredited program or an advanced degree in architecture, architectural history or a related field
  • May require advanced subject, language, and/or technical expertise

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of standards such as DACS, EAD, LCSH, AAT
  • Experience with ArchivesSpace, Archivists' Toolkit or other collection management systems preferred
  • Experience handling architectural materials preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to meet deadlines and apply policies and procedures consistently
  • Ability to ascend and descend industrial ladders
  • Ability to lift and move 40 pounds
  • Means of transportation to work sites at both the Getty Center in Brentwood and the Getty’s off-site warehouse in Valencia, approximately 30 miles to the north
